Alvarado was the Chairman of Domestic and International Programs for the Parapsychology Foundation, the General Series Editor of the Foundation’s Scholarly Monograph Series and the Associate Editor of the International Journal of Parapsychology. Dr. Alvarado was instrumental in the planning of the Foundation’s conventions, forums, courses and lectures. In addition, he maintained communication with international colleagues and served as an information officer for library patrons and the press. He also coordinates the Parapsychology Foundation LYCEUM program. Now, as then, his current areas of research include the out-of-body experience (OBE) and other such psychic experiences as aura vision and apparitions.

He is well-known among scientific parapsychologists in the United States, Europe and Latin America for his numerous articles in English and Spanish, published in specialized journals including the Journal of Psychology, Dissociation, Journal of Parapsychology, and the European Journal of Parapsychology, among others. His published work has focused on historical studies of parapsychology and on the psychological variables related to the experience of psychic phenomena. For more than a decade he has played an active role in the Parapsychological Association, the international association of scientific and academic parapsychologists. He has served several terms on the PA Board of Directors and as President in 1995, became the first Latin American to hold that position. He was re-elected to that post again in 2002-2003.

Dr. Alvarado started his working life in parapsychology as an Assistant to Dr. Ian Stevenson at the what was then called the Division of Parapsychology at the University of Virginia (1982 through 1986). Following that he held the appointment of Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Parapsychology in Durham, North Carolina (1986 through 1993), now called the Rhine Research Center. From 1995 through July of 2000, he co-directed Centro de Estudios Integrales de Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where, from 1997 through 1999, he also held an adjunct faculty position at Carlos Albizu University.

From May of 2010 until January of 2013, Alvarado held a faculty appointment at Atlantic University in Virginia Beach, Virginia where he was also the Scholar in Residence. He currently holds two adjunct faculty appointments, one as an Assistant Professor of Research at the Division of Perceptual Studies in the Department of Neurobehavioral Sciences and Psychiatry at the University of Virginia (from March 2003), and the other at Sofia University (formerly the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology, since 2004) where he serves on dissertation committees.

Since February of 2013 he has held the position of Visiting Scholar at the Rhine Research Center, serves on the Scientific Advisory Board, and is an instructor in the Rhine Education Center. His blog, Parapsychology: News, History, Research has a growing following. With his wife and colleague, Dr. Nancy L. Zingrone, he has recently co-founded the YouTube channel, Parapsychology Online, and its supporting website by the same name.

Dr. Alvarado is also a frequent volunteer for the Parapsychology Foundation.
